I believe a vacation should take place no matter the time of year. Although some vacation spots rely on the season and weather, that should not stop you from getting out there and having a good time. Believe me, since 2020 we all have been experiencing some difficulties in some ways and a vacation is what you might need but before you leave there are things you need to know before traveling to a foreign country. This is where planning comes into play. Since the pandemic, travel has changed in many ways and is no longer a flight away type situation. There are certain stipulations that are in place now and it makes traveling twice as hard. Hence, I am giving you some traveling tips on things you need to know before you leave so we can get you going on your way.
Things you need to know before traveling to a foreign country
Passport & Visa
Make sure all your documents are in order. Passport and IDs should be up to date and not close to the expiration date. Some countries require a visa for entry. In this case, you will need to apply for a visa and get approval before you leave. If you are a resident of another country and that country has no visa requirements for the country you are traveling to. Then you need to find out if you need a visa or other documentation based on the country passport you hold.
Money & Currencies
Get all of your money sorted out. Ensure that your credit cards can be used in the country you are traveling to. Give your banks a travel notice to avoid a hold on your account. Also, find out the currency that the country uses, stock wallet with enough cash but not too much, because if you lose it you lose all of it. Know the conversion rate because this affects certain decisions.
Vaccination & Prescription
Get vaccinated before traveling to a foreign country, remember it’s a new environment and you are prone to certain illnesses and some might be deadly. Since the pandemic, some countries do require a negative COVID test and soon a vaccination card. Fill your prescriptions before you leave and always travel with them on hand in case of emergencies.
Pack Appropriately
Before traveling to any foreign country make sure you know what the weather is like there. Pack for the weather and pack what you are going to need, luggage fees can be pricey, and also you may want to have room to bring back a few souvenirs and or gifts. Check out these packing hacks here. Tips: Avoid bringing anything of great value. If you need to, make sure to have a safe in your room. If not take the item with you on your excursions.
Book the stay
There are so many options for accommodations, you can opt for Airbnb, hotel, bed, and breakfast a resort, etc, Or you can use a travel agency which will make everything easier but can be pricier. You can opt for a cheaper travel agency site that offers rewards and promotional prices. I love to use ORBITZ because I get rewards for each purchase I make through them, I use my rewards towards flight purchases.
Language of Country
It’s always wise to know the language of the country you are traveling to. While you may not have a clue how to communicate using sentences try to know basic words like hi, bye, thank you, and goodnight. It doesn’t hurt. Using your phone you can download translation apps to help you communicate and get around easily.
Culture & Custom
Research about the country’s culture and customs. This is crucial because we don’t want you to offend or insult anyone or get into trouble a matter of fact. In some countries, it is not customary to tip while some are. I know when you travel to certain parts of Asia and Africa it is customary for women to cover their body and head. Things like these you need to know.
Travel Advisory and Warnings
Check the countries website for information or the CDC website for travel advisory and warnings. This will inform you of natural disasters, outbreaks (given the pandemic) political uprisings, or other information on safety issues being experienced at that particular time. Some countries also require you to register with the embassy. This is very crucial whether you are given a choice to do so, or not. Registering with the embassy will help during emergencies, this way they can be your security, assistance, and information service if anything happens. Since the pandemic, some countries are now requiring a negative covid test or a vaccination card.
Copy all Important Documentations
Make a copy of your travel documentation just in case they get stolen or lost. You can leave a copy at home or save it to your email, icloud, or google drive.
Phones
Go over your phone plan and see how much it will cost if any to roam. International plans can be pretty expensive. Some phone plans have international plans for 10-20 dollars a month so that’s not a bad idea to activate just for the month. If your plan doesn’t allow roaming, It’s best to put the phone on airplane mode during your stay and get a local burner phone. Also, if your phone is unlocked try getting a sim card (which is inexpensive).
Transportation
Look into the best form of transportation. This helps you get from the airport to the hotel and around the area. There is various form such as taxi, tourist buses, ferries or local buses. Choose the one that is best suitable for you
Travel Insurance
Get travel insurance. This covers medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost luggage, flight accident, and other loss while traveling.
