This New York Sour is similar to the Whisky Sour this delicious cocktail is a classic one that is a crowd-pleaser. This has a nice finish with a dry red wine to balance things out.
What is a sour in Cocktail?
A sour is a style of mixed drink, usually made with sweet and sour. Sweet for the sugar or honey and sour for the acid whether lime, lemon, or cider. The more classic one is a Whisky Sour. This New York Sour adds to a growing list of sours. The Chicago Sour, Continental Sour, or Southern Whisky.
What kind of Whisky to use in your New York Sour?
I chose to use Makers Mark Bourbon however, you can choose to use any kind of bourbon you like or rye. It doesn’t matter which one you use the cocktail doesn’t call for specific rye or bourbon. You can very well go for the most affordable bourbon.
Wine in your New York Sour
The wine you choose really matters, It will break or make the taste of the cocktail, since that’s the first thing that you taste when you have a sip. I would go with something dry, fruit-forward, and very delicious. Some would say avoid a sweet which is right but remember fruit-forward and sweet are not the same.
Egg White or No Egg White
With or without the egg whites the drink is amazing. The egg white adds a little depth and texture to this drink. Honestly, you’re fine without it. As I said the utmost important thing is the wine selection.
Serving the New York Sour
You can choose to garnish if you like or serve with ice or without but on the rocks would be better in a rocks glass.

Equipment
- Shaker
- Bar Spoon
Ingredients
- 2 oz Bourbon or Rye Whisky
- 3/4 simple syrup
- 1 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 oz red wine {preferably fruit-forward n tasty}
- 3/4 oz egg whites optional
- Ice for shaking and serving
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients except for the wine in a shaker and shake vigorously for 30 secs.
- Strain over ice in a glass of choice.
- Slowly pour the wine of choice over the back of a bar spoon so that it floats on top of the drink.
