Don’t be afraid to try it. Okra doesn’t have to be slimy. It can be deliciously crispy and crunchy if you know how to make it. Try some Fried Okra.
What is Okra?
Okra is otherwise known as Okro is native to West Africa, Ethiopia, and South Asia. It has a mild flavor on the outside is hard decoding on how to fit it is but has plenty of seeds and is slimy in texture on the inside. When steamed, boil, or cooked down okra becomes similar. However, when fried it becomes crunchy.
How to cook okra and what to eat it with?
Okra can be paired with many things and can be cooked in many different ways. I usually have my okra with fish, cabbage, salted fish, or white beans. When not frying okra, sauteeing it with tons of seasoning such as onion, garlic, peppers, tomatoes, etc is a great way to have it. The flavors will come right thru. You won’t even understand how delicious Okra is when cooked the right way. Fried Okra can be a snack, main dish, or side dish.
I love to incorporate “ground provisions” (which is known to West Indians root vegetable stables) and other natural foods into my meal. I am slowly finding different delicious ways to cook and pair them. Honestly, just trying new things can take your taste buds to another level.
I decided to use 3 different kinds of coats for the Okra. Cornmeal, All-purpose flour, and coconut flour. I had tried using just the flour, the difference is the texture it is much crunchier and bready. Nothing is wrong with that at all it was great. If you prefer that by all means go ahead.
Seasoning your okra
In terms of the seasoning to spice it up. I chose the Cajun seasoning because it goes perfectly. Instead, you could use paprika, salt, black pepper with garlic powder. Also delicious!

- Frying pan
- 10 single okra
- ½ cup coconut flour
- 1 oz all-purpose flour
- 1 oz cornmeal
- 1 tbsp cajun seasoning
- Salt to taste
- 2 eggs
- Oil for frying
- Start by preparing the okra, cut the ends off the okra.
- Use a mallet and smash the okras from top to bottom. (Optional)
- In a bowl add eggs, a pinch of salt, and 1 ½ tsp of cajun seasoning and whisk.
- In another bowl add all-purpose flour, coconut flour, and cornmeal pinch of salt and the remaining cajun seasoning together and mix in.
- Add oil to the frying pan on medium heat. (pour up to 2 inches of the pan)
- Dip Okra in egg mixture then in the flour mix, dust off the excess flour mix and add to the frying pan.
- Fry for around 3-4 minutes or until brown or crispy.
